It's All Happening...

“Charleston Peace One Day will hold the 2nd Annual Charleston Peace Day Celebration Festival at Brittlebank Park on September 20th, 2009 from 1-6pm. The festival will unite Charleston’s many cultures with the rest of the world in celebrating the United Nation’s International Day of Peace and Ceasefire in a community celebration that is inclusive of education, art, music, sport, and other peace-building initiatives in an event that is free to the public.

This year’s festival will bring together all of Charleston’s cultures in order to celebrate intercultural cooperation with activities for everyone in the community to participate in to show how Charleston is working toward establishing a more peaceful community. Components of the festival include : Entertainment by Delia Chariker, Lowcountry Flute Circle, One Accord Gospel Choir, Po’Ridge, David Carroll, Moody Black, Preach Jacobs, DJ Pericles, with key-community and a diversity of religious leaders speaking on peace. The Kids Global Village, sponsored by Montessori Schools, gives children the opportunity to learn through peace-building activities. Suarez Soccer School will sponsor Soccer and Socci games throughout the day promoting peace through sport. A fine art exhibit and partnership with the WALK Gallery will be installed for community artist to visually express what peace means to them. There will be local food, craft, and merchant vendors for attendees to enjoy.

A diverse network of non-profits from the community will be present for people to get more information about programs they can become a part of year round to help build peace in the Lowcounty. The festival will be powered by solar energy and have compost and recycling bins in order to promote environmental sustainability. A benefit concert and food drive co-sponsored by Conscious Alliance will follow the festival at Music Farm with musical performances by Dangermuffin, Fireworks Show, and Organ Donor. Charleston’s efforts toward creating a culture of peace will be documented by Open Dome Productions on that day in order to show what Charleston is doing to help set an example for the rest of the world. “LOCAL ARTISTS ENGAGE THE COMMUNITY TO REFLECT ON A GLOBAL EFFORT TO ACHIEVE ONE DAY OF PEACE AND CEASEFIRE”

Fine Art Exhibit Information

Charleston Peace One Day has invited artist and curator, Tina Christophillis to put on a Fine Art Exhibit at the 2nd Annual festival held at Brittlebank Park on September 20th from 1-6pm at Brittlebank park. The Fine Art Exhibit will feature local artist’s works that challenge an audience to reflect upon the nature, scope, and possibility of an International Day of Peace and Ceasefire.

The goal of the Charleston Peace One Day festival is to bring together all of Charleston’s cultures in order to celebrate intercultural cooperation with activities for everyone in the community to participate in to show how Charleston is working toward a culture of peace. Fine Art has the ability to create awareness and reflect on other cultures through creative vision and respect, and Charleston Peace One Day is excited to bring this component into this year’s festival. “ I am grateful for the opportunity to engage the local community in a global effort to use art as a way to transcend the barriers and boundaries of diversity,” curator Tina Christophillis said.

The Fine Art Exhibit will feature the work of local artist: Mary Edna Fraser, Karin Olah, Gregory Guay, Shannon Di, Ben Timpson, Tiffiny Lippincott, Seth Corts, Timothy Pakron ,Lesley Wamsley, Luke Vehorn, Lynne Riding, Lisa Shimko, Jody Christian, Joanna Jackson, Mary Walker, and Tyler Ann Blanton, Tina Christophillis, Jeff Fitzharris, and Matthew Bowers.

Artist’s work may also be viewed from the end of September and October through the WALK GALLERY, which fills the windows of empty storefronts around Charleston with regional artwork.
CP1D and Conscious Alliance will also use a piece from the exhibit as the poster for the benefit concert and food drive on September 20th at Music Farm with musical performances by Dangermuffin, Fireworks Show, and Organ Donor and a multimedia production by Open Dome Productions.”
